Impossible

Michelle Singleton never forgets what people said when they saw her carrying her son, Shawn, a child who should have been old enough to walk.

“One of the things people would say is if you would make that boy walk, he wouldn’t look like that,” she remembers.

If only they knew how badly Michelle wanted Shawn to have that privilege.

The Hard Way

A few chickens once walked around a farm in Mexico, minding their own business, until a young Jorge Rios forced the flock to teach him a valuable lesson.

"We were just messing around, and I kept on provoking them. And they came at me and started plucking at me and my back," Rios recalled. "I was all torn up."

He'd need that lesson some day if he was going to make history for his family.

Comeback

All Anne Vaught remembers after the Ironman 70.3 finish line was waking up in the emergency room with her jaw stitched and wired shut.

Less than a month later, it was all she could think about at the start line of her next race.

“I don’t want to fall on my face,” Vaught recalled thinking. “Am I even going to finish, I am going be able to perform?”

Surprise bunts in 1st inning spark early charge

AUSTIN — The Shiner Lady Comanches spent last week hating a certain pitching machine but trusting it would pay off at the UIL Class 2A State Tournament.

"It pitches all kinds of stupid stuff, and (coach Steven Cerny would) have us on it every day," said senior Hannah Nevlud. "It doesn't matter if we were hitting on the field with it, or we were bunting on the field with it during our athletic period. He always had us bunting on that machine."

Shiner executed its early plan of attack, and five innings later, the Lady Comanches topped Windthorst 13-0 for their sixth state championship in program history.

"One thing coach Cerny teaches you in life, failing to prepare is preparing to fail," Nevlud said....

Seniors reflect on growing pains after hoisting title trophy again

AUSTIN — Hannah Nevlud looked down at the sleeve of her uniform, knowing the state championship victory might be the last time she'd ever wear it.

Or maybe, the Shiner senior thought as she stood with a gold medal around her neck, she could find a way to take the gold jersey home, too.

"Somebody punch me, and I'll bleed on it," Nevlud said. "If I bleed on it, they can't take it away."

Nevlud and her three fellow seniors left the field as back-to-back state champions after a 13-0 win over Windthorst in the UIL Class 2A State Championship.

Tears were shed on those same jerseys in 2012 and 2013, when district rival Weimar beat the Lady Comanches in the regional final and went on to win state both seasons.

"It fueled our fire, man," said Kori Landman, who transferred to Shiner before her sophomore season....
